X Factor
On Seven's 2021 release shines
Vittorio and Sula De Stefano’s seven-acre farm on Line 3 in Niagara-on-the-Lake has become one of the most exciting spots for chardonnay in Canada (and beyond). Since the first commercial release in 2017, the small-batch wines from On Seven Estate Winery have never failed to impress with their character, complexity and that X-factor that makes great wines stand apart. These two remarkable wines from the 2021 vintage are released to On Seven’s wine club September 29.
On Seven The Pursuit Chardonnay 2021
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Peninsula $48
Hand-harvested, whole cluster pressed, French oak fermentation (25 per cent new, 75 per cent older (neutral) barrels). Selection of declassified barrels.
Showing really well at this early stage, The Pursuit always impresses with its rich character, offering layers of tree fruit, savoury and nutty flavours. The balance is pitch perfect; complete with a vibrant undertow. Refreshing finish lasts and lasts. Drink now-2032. 164 cases (1,968 bottles). (94/100)
On Seven The Devotion Chardonnay 2021
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Peninsula $68
Hand-harvested, whole cluster pressed, French oak fermentation (25 per cent new, 75 per cent older (neutral) barrels). Top barrels selected.
Given the first pick of the barrels produced from On Seven’s estate vineyard, you can expect that The Devotion will offer more depth of flavour with an impressive creamy texture. But the art of the blend offers harmony and polish, too. A full-bodied and refreshing style, this suggests a satisfying mix of apricot/peach fruit with stony/savoury and richer vanilla/honey) notes that carry through to a lingering finish. Drink now-2032. 120 cases (1,440 bottles). (96/100)
