Leaning Post Wines 2016 Pinot Noir The Freak Unfiltered

Winemaker Ilya Senchuk continues to up the ante on his research and development wine series, Freaks and Geeks, with this expressive and complex Pinot Noir from the estate vineyard behind the winery. Senchuk Vineyard is a five-acre block planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2013. The 2016 Freak Pinot comes from the second crop and was produced with spontaneous primary fermentation with 50 percent whole clusters, followed by spontaneous malolatic fermentation. Other than the addition of yeast nutrient, there's been no additions or subtractions: no sulphites and the wine was bottled without fining or filteration. As a result, the finished wine is cloudy and exhibits more dramatic earthy and savoury notes compared to conventional Senchuk Pinot Noirs (the 2016 is still in barrel, watch this space). But it's the remarkable texture and structure that makes this truly stand apart. This promises to evolve nicely in bottle over the next three or four years. 47 cases
