Legendary Champagne house Dom Pérignon made news when it decided to release its 2009 vintage ahead of the 2008, positioning its wine from a warmer growing season in front of the product of a cooler, more classic harvest. It’s the first time Dom Pérignon has released a vintage out of chronological order, but by all accounts the 2008 Brut can use time to unwind from its super nervy acidity. Where does that leave the new release? More than just a footnote, Dom Pérignon 2009 stands out in the range thanks to its impressive texture that calls to mind a rich white Burgundy with a fine mousse that injects freshness and delicacy to balance that intensity. The house style is always designed to show the vintage character and this definitely reveals the ripe core of fruit developed from all of that sun exposure with complexity from lingering smoke and spice notes. It’s a pleasure to drink now, but will be interesting to see how it develops over the years.
