The Luis Cañas label is becoming well-known to Ontario wine lovers on the strength of new listings at the LCBO. This barrel fermented white Rioja is a welcome addition to the shelves as a great value expression that showcases a more traditional take on Viura and Malvasia (this blend is 85% Viura and 15% Malvasia, from 50+ year old vines) based wines from Rioja. (Many producers have turned to stainless steel in order to bring fresher whites to market to meet consumer demand.) Barrel fermented and aged for four months on lees in a mix of 75% French and 25% American oak makes for an enjoyable rich and ripe white wine marked by nicely balanced oak spice and fruit notes with a refreshingly clean finish.
